BOONE — Former Appalachian State middle linebacker John Law found a place to play football in 2018 with the indoor Atlanta Havoc.
One day after returning to Boone with the Havoc to take on the High Country Grizzlies, Law signed with the Washington Valor of the Arena Football League on May 7.
The Valor joined the AFL in 2017 and are owned by Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which also owns the NBA Washington Wizards, the WNBA Washington Mystics, the NHL’s Washington Capitals and fellow AFL franchise the Baltimore Brigade.
Law, who scored a touchdown against the Grizzlies by scooping a fumble and returning it 14 yards for a score, helped the Havoc take a 74-32 victory over the Grizzlies. He was considering signing with the Albany Empire, also of the AFL, but Havoc general manager Josh Resignalo, who was the head coach of the Grizzlies in 2017, confirmed that Law signed with Washington.
Had he signed with Albany, Law would have been reunited with former Appalachian State and High Country Grizzlies receiver Malachi Jones, who was named rookie of the year of the National Arena League, in 2017. Jones caught seven passes for 62 yards and a touchdown in Albany’s 47-23 win over Washington on May 7.
Jones also ran for a score in the game. He leads the team in receiving yards with 226. Jones and Law will square off against each other when the team’s play each other again on May 11 in Washington.
